When decay or a crack reaches the nerve, the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected and the throbbing pain begins. Root canal treatment removes that infected pulp, disinfects and shapes the canals with rotary instruments and seals them — so the tooth stays in your mouth instead of being extracted.

How the treatment works

Diagnosis
X-ray plus vitality and percussion testing to confirm the nerve is involved and rule out a fracture.

Access and cleaning
Under profound local anaesthesia the pulp chamber is opened and every canal is cleaned to its full working length.

Disinfection and sealing
Canals are irrigated, dried and filled with biocompatible gutta-percha, then sealed.

Crown protection
A treated tooth becomes brittle, so a cap is fitted within a few weeks to restore full chewing strength.

Does a root canal hurt?
The treatment is done under anaesthesia and almost every patient tells us it hurt far less than the toothache that brought them in.
Can it be done in one sitting?
Yes, most non-infected cases finish in a single appointment. Teeth with active pus discharge may need a second visit.
Do I really need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, yes. The tooth loses moisture and internal structure, and a cap is what stops it splitting under chewing load.
